Présentation |
The “Association française de sociologie” (AFS – French Association of Sociology) was founded on 22nd March 2002 when around 250 sociologists gathered in Paris for a general assembly. It succeeds the “Société française de sociologie” (French Society of Sociology). Conform to AFS statutes, the society is open to all sociologists working in France, whatever their professional status may be.
Today, it has 1300 members who partake in over forty Working Groups. Some of these groups are well-established whereas others are in the process of being set up. About a forth of its members are PhD students or recent graduates.
The association's twenty member executive committee pilots its activities. Executive members are elected for four years. The association held its first convention in February 2004 at the University of Paris 13. Over a thousand participants came to this event. Its second convention took place at the University of Bordeaux II from 5th to 9th September 2006, with 1400 participants.
The aim of the AFS is to provide sociologists in France with a framework in which to regroup and organize. Aside from the activities conducted by its different research groups, the association's main tools are its Newsletter which is sent to association members every two weeks and its website including its on-line review Socio-logos.
The president and executive committee would like to avoid the bureaucratization of the organization and would equally like to continue the association's democratic initiative as well as the scientific quality of the association's debates.
